Perhaps the biggest underlying theme is the idea about the true nature of mankind. Golding explores the idea that mankind is innately evil and that it is only the contrast of society and civilization that prevents that nature from being prevalent.

There are no lengthy passages nor does he choose particularly poetic words to describe the events. His writing is powerful without these stylistic devices. The same can be said for his use of literary devices. When used, they are direct. For example, the use of symbolism see below and metaphor is very thoughtful but not hard to interpret. Golding also employs an aloof or distant tone throughout the book. This reflects the way that the boys treat one another. The conch shell is one of the major symbols of this novel. But, as the boys lose touch with their civilized sides, the conch shell is discarded. The signal fire is a very important symbol in the novel. The fire is maintained diligently at first but as the book progresses, and the boys slip farther from civilization, their concentration on the fire wanes.

They eventually lose their desire to be rescued. At first, the civilization is still intact with boys but as the novel progresses on, the boys develop a savage trait and their sense of civilization begins to dissipate. Jack felt that without rules, a person is free to do whatever he desires, which exposes their true nature and it is almost if he does not know the difference between rights and wrong. Savagery and civilization is the common theme for the novel and as these two strong forces clash so do the boys.

At the beginning of the story the boys are very scared and confused on where they are because this place is a unknown entity they have no clue what could be on the island and how they are going to survive. This is symbolism of human instinct, because when people encounter unknown experiences they start to freak out and make irrational decisions on easy problems with simple solutions. While Simon is still scared he is not making irrational decisions, he is trying to figure out how to survive and follow orders and creating shelters and fire. Thus, witnessing failure in the beginning of novel as he is gaining experience from a new life where civility is ignored and savagery is widely required, in order to be productive, gain authority and survive.

This event is significant throughout the novel since Jack experiencing such humiliation leads him to strive for success as he continues to attempt the change in his life while the group is isolated from society, compared to how the Germans viewed the world, differently than everyone else as the military served a form of dictatorship, and savagery against non-Germans, consequently demonstrating isolation and struggle for change in the world during World War. When the boys are first stranded on the island after the plane crashes, Ralph emerges as a leader for the boys, partially due to his strong display of his ego. On the investigation to find the beast, Ralph uses his id as opposed to his ego when he participates in hurting Robert when Robert is pretending to be a pig.

His lack of use of his ego is seen here because he is becoming increasingly unaware of how the smoke from the fire is needed to get rescue from the outside world. Since Ralph is no longer as focused on the fire and how it means rescue, the fire is a symbol of his increased disinterest in getting rescued. He still is attempting to stay aware of reality, but despite these efforts his mental clarity and leadership are in.
