THE GRADUATE - TITLE SEQUENCE film analysis
Medium close ups are used to imply romance in the sequence as we can see the female actor clearly. This affects the audience as we do not know who she is, what role she plays or who she is involved with. I will use this idea to introduce the romance quality into my sequence. These are the same titles that I plan to use in my sequence. Throughout the sequence one title appears per screen except at 1 minute 36 seconds, when two titles about music appear.
In my title sequence there will be one title per screen so that you can focus on them better. The titles appear for 3 seconds each throughout the sequence with a gap of 3 seconds between them. This matches the beat as the music is also quite fast paced. The titles are positioned in varying places across the screen, jumping from left, right up and down. The same font is used throughout, a script type font in black. I will use a similar font, possibly more like handwriting, as this creates an informal feel. The titles are edited short and quick appearing when the colour of the screen changes to sepia and has a drawn quality. The story is being told through different clips of the film being put into the sequence. The clips appear random and show various different action shots of the characters.
We are being told some of what happens in the film, such as an explosion, fight, love interest, but we do not know why these events are happening or who the characters are in relation to each other, which makes us want to find out more. The sound in the sequence in non diagetic as it is music. The music is fast paced with a steady beat which is catchy and recognizable. The sound used enhances the thriller and action and it is pacey. I will follow this idea of only using non diagetic sound in my title sequence as I do not want to give away what happens in the film through the sound. Also, it allows the audience to focus on the titles and the clips included.
The edit in this title sequence is interesting as there is no colour, except black and white and sepia. The title sequences drive is a distinctive crime scene genre, it starts set in a car with very low key lighting and is set at night time. This gives off the effect that it will be a sly and a deep, darker and drama style film. The title sequence of drive has very good angle shots to portray the crime kind of scene of the film. There are a few low angle shots, which show that this is a dominating character. There is an interesting shot of the main actor Ryan Gosling, with just his eyes in the car mirror; this shot helps us see this is a mysterious crime genre film.
A lot of the other shots are angled to show Ryan Gosling as the dominating character. The certificate of the film is an 18, so the audience is going to be for people over the age of The audience type would be people much interested in the crime type of genre. The actor Ryan Gosling is also in films such as crazy stupid love , the notebook , gangster squad and the united states of Leland The lighting in the drive title sequence is in a low key and makes the footage look dark and sinister, not much lighting is used and gives off the crime effect.
Each shot was on the screen for 3 seconds but began to fade on the 4th second. The titles in the title sequence are pink fushia colour, and are in a fancy font. This is odd for a rather masculine film but they look great against the dark shots in the night of the car and outside. These shot appear in random timing, the most common one is every 3 seconds, but mainy are random with no regular sequence. I have thought about if they were in any other colour or font and the effect wouldnt be as great. They completley stand out from the shot as the are a very vibrant pink. With the titles being pink, it definietly shows a fancy side to the title sequence. The drive title sequence shows a short clip of some of the settings in the film, the first shot is a great establishing shot; the first couple of shots are in the town and in a house.
These shots are giving us a rough idea of where the film is going to be set and placed. I enjoyed this song and it fits extremely well with the shots. Actor Ryan Gosling looks great on camera and walks to the beat of the song. As Ryan Gosling turns off the light switch as he walks out the door and the beat of the song goes to his movement. The music has a slow but constant beat and fits well with the driving as well. The sound is non diagetic sound; it is for our entertainment the actors cannot hear this sound.
The cutting and edit of the shots has been done with precision. The shots are not jumpy in any way, the different shots flow thoroughly throughout the sequence. This title sequence appealed to me greatly as it gave me great ideas for my own title sequence. I wish to use my dads car in some of the shots, the title sequence made me see that these shots are so simple and easy to capture, yet they make the whole sequence look amazing. The sequence uses good angled shots in the car and has given me some inspiration. The title sequence of drive was one of the very first title sequences i saw. This title sequence has inspried me to create a title sequence of my own involving cars, trafic, shots of cars along the road and journeys in cars.
I took some of the shots from drive and used them as my ideas, for example;. This close up shot of rylan gosling with his hand on the steering wheel, corisponds to one of my shots with my dads hand on the steering wheel in the car. The slow tempo of the song creates a cool and calming affect in the opening sequence, the edit of the sequence is to exteeme prosition and i would like to create a title sequence of my own to this standard of excellence.

The news report to begin with, so we know this is going to be something big as it is on the news, the 2nd shot of the building is a high establishing shot which shows you the city in which this is happening. The other 5 pictures help to tell the story but not in any cignificant way in those shots. I could use this title sequence as inspiration for my work as it clearly focused on the titles and I would like my title sequence to be focused on the titles. I also like the use of bright colours in this title sequence and I would use that as inspiration in my own work.
