In my community, there was little support for my ambitions. Muslim girls were expected to grow-up to be wives and mothers, not chase globetrotting careers. My assignments took me to front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan where I witnessed the constant cycle of violence that kill and displace civilians caught between US attacks and anti-American factions, from terror groups such as Isis to Iranian-backed militias. America can attempt to close this chapter of its history, but the survivors of these wars cannot escape the fallout.
